So this is the first Spiritual Sunday, I'm really excited to do these posts and can't wait to hear the feedback. So I was doing my daily scroll on facebook when I found a couple posts talking about how Yule came to be, the history and how Christians should know where Christmas traditions has came from. I do believe this is important but I do not believe that one or the other should be disregarding or bashing each other (or their religion) based on the past. So with out further ado, here are some things you may like to know about Winter Solstice.
Yule was first recognized by the Norse from the twenty first of December up until January. In the past, Romans celebrated Saturnalia, which was a full month and many things were turned upside down such as the social status and roles; this is where we got gift giving! For Pagans or Wiccans, Yule is celebrated as the rebirth of light for half of the year and Holly and Mistletoe were still growing and used. So, in Christianity the main holiday is Easter because of the resurrection; the bible didn't name a date of birth for Jesus Christ so Pope Julius I declared it December 25. Most Christians incorporated ideas from Saturnalia, Yule and other influences to try to convert others to what was fast growing religion to what we know today!
Now if you stayed with me through that, I hope you found something to be enlightening through this little piece of history facts. I don't think that my post next Sunday will be as controversial, but I really felt this needed to be heard. I understand the frustration of not being heard, many have been for as long as it can be remembered but to be leaving negativity on someone's religion during a time that is of peace and joy can be quite a contradiction. I hope three things you can take from this is 1) Never stop learning about your history, it can be rewritten and 2) Remember why you celebrate the holidays you celebrate and 3) When you remind people constantly, belittle, or snap back at comments to defend, is it just as bad as the one who commented depending on your answer?
Also a lot of opinion mashed into this, but please let me know what you thought of it in the comments!
